Irvine Park Railroad is a 1/3 scale train that take both children and adults on a ride through beautiful and historic Irvine Regional Park. Located in the foothills of Orange, Irvine Park Railroad is open seven days a week (weather permitting).

The park also features other family activities including Wheel Fun Rentals at Irvine park bike and paddle boat rentals, pony rides, the Orange County Zoo and more. And, there are group event locations that can be used for birthday parties, company picnics, reunions and other special events.

Weekday: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Weekend: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Weekday: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Bike Rentals in Irvine Park

Wheel Fun Rentals is the premier provider of fun and unique outdoor recreational vehicles including a complete fleet of bikes that can be enjoyed by single riders or an entire family. Our fleet of Wheel Fun Rentals at Irvine Park cycles -- which are ideal for sightseeing, people watching, exercising or simply enjoying Irvine Regional Park -- include the surrey, double surrey, deuce coupe, quad sport and chopper. Other bikes available for rent include tandem bikes, cruiser bikes and kid's bikes.

We also have paddle boats available to rent. Wheel Fun Rentals at Irvine Park is adjacent to the historic old boathouse next to the lake.

Renaming Our C.P. Huntington

Neil H. Underhill had a career with the county for almost 22 years. He loved Irvine Regional Park almost as much as he loved Trains. As a young boy, Neil loved trains which stuck with him all the way til the end. It was a hobby that did not just end with collecting memoriabilia. Neil traveled cross country as well as across the world to ride trains, take pictures or just watch the passing of locomotives.

Neil Underhill was a cherished friend to the Irvine Park Railroad. He was very welcoming and helpful in bringing the Irvine Park Railroad to life. Neil was instrumental in making the Irvine Park Railroad come to be. After Neil passed away from Non-Hogkins Lymphoma, it seemed like a natural thing to re-name the train in his honor.

On March 4th, 2003 the Irvine Park Railroad locomotive was re-named the "N.H. Underhill" in loving memory of our friend and train enthusiast.

A Bit of History

Growing up as childhood friends in South Orange County, John Ford and Steve Horn were inseparable. From the classroom, little league games and family vacations, John and Steve could always be found together.

At the beginning of the summer in 1977, John’s older brother asked Don Farmen if his little brother John and his friend Steve could work along side him at the snack bar in Doheny State Beach, California. And, the rest is history.

Both 13 years old at the time, John and Steve spent their summers and vacations working for Don Farmen. From renting bikes and beach gear, to selling sodas and burgers, John and Steve worked hard to learn the concession and catering business. As the years went by, they gained an increasing amount of knowledge, experience and responsibility.

In 1986, after being accepted to college, John and Steve learned of the opportunity to secure the food and bike rental concessions at Irvine Regional Park. They took a chance on their dream and signed a lease to operate their own concessions business. As things began to take off, they decided to expand their operations to include paddleboat rentals and eventually in 1988 they started their own catering business, Company Picnic Specialists. John and Steve’s families and friends often pitched in to help grow their newly-formed business.

As Irvine Park began to attract more visitors, their business continued to develop and grow. It was John and Steve’s desire to provide even more activities and attractions for park visitors. And, in 1996, John and Steve founded Irvine Park Railroad.

Over the years, John and Steve have continuously expanded the Irvine Park Railroad foundation. Special events, including the Easter Eggstravaganza, Anniversary Celebration, Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Train have been created to offer activities to visitors year round. And, the Irvine Park Railroad has also been expanded over the year to include Party Pavilions, moon bounce rentals, a full-service snack bar and a lot more.

Today, Irvine Park Railroad is known as a top destination in Southern California for family activities and fun!
