California History Education Program Public Day

Participate in one of Orange County's most educational and fun field trips!

This program - created by teachers, for teachers - meets curriculum requirements for 4th grade history/social science content standards for California state public schools. During the field trip, children and parents can go back in time and experience the life of a miner, the history of California, the routes people used to travel to get to California and more.

Price: $12.50 per person (children and adults).

Times: 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Each session will last for two hours.

Picnic tables are available for those that would like to enjoy lunch at Irvine Park Railroad.
Lunch may be purchased from the snack bar or you may bring a sack lunch.

Train Rides

The train takes both children and adults on a trip through beautiful and scenic Irvine Regional Park. The train ride is narrated by the engineer and passengers will learn about the history of California and the transcontinental railroad.

Miner's Shaft

Visitors will have fun as they explore the depths of the mine shaft constructed for the 4th grade education field trip program. Visitors will also be able to see the types of tools used to dig and navigate through the mines.

Panning for Gold

A favorite event for all Irvine Park Railroad visitors, both children and adults will experience panning for gold using a working water trough. While panning, visitors will be educated on tools used to pan, the rush in economy and population growth in California.

Miner's Camp

All visitors will experience a fun and real life demonstration given by a "49er" on life during the gold rush. This camp has all of the daily tools and equipment used during life in the 1840s. Visitors will have fun - as the miners did - as you rope "cattle" and learn games that helped pass time for the miners.

Water Wheel Demonstration

The water wheel demonstration is a true-to-life replica of a water wheel. Enjoy the water wheel and learn the importance of water during the gold rush.

Wagons, Buggies & Transportation

This portion of the program includes routes that settlers took to get to California from all directions and the lives they led while making the cross-country journey. A 4th grade history field trip presentation will be made on important California history leaders including James Beckworth, John Bidwell, John C. Fremont and others.

Reservations for this 4th grade history program family day must be made and paid for in advance. To make a reservation, call Irvine Park Railroad at (714) 997-3968. There are no refunds unless it is raining on the day of the event. In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled to a later date.

This program meets the curriculum requirements for 4th grade history/social science
standards for California public schools (Section 4.3 and one-half of Section 4.4).

This program is approximately 2 1/2 hours. A Party Pavilion will be available if students
and teachers choose to bring a sack lunch and enjoy it at the end of the program.

Cost: $12.50 per student (minimum 75 students) ■ $3.00 per adult ■ Teachers are FREE!

Locomotive Loop

Locomotive Loop is located directly behind the train station. If you would like to have a child's birthday party, corporate party, company picnic or other large group event in central Orange County, this is the ideal location.

Starting Price: $325.00

Locomotive Loop is available to rent during the months of May through August.

Christmas Train

2012 Christmas Train

Tis the season, once again, for Irvine Park Railroad’s annual Christmas Train. Come with family and friends and take this enchanting night ride through historic Irvine Regional Park to meet Santa Claus. The train will depart from the brightly-lit train station and drop passengers off at the North Pole. Children can share their wish list with Santa and have their photo taken with him too. You may take pictures with your personal camera or you may purchase a photo taken by Irvine Park Railroad.

After visiting with Santa, hop back aboard the train and enjoy the colorful Christmas lights and decorations, as well as the magical “Tunnel of Lights”, on the ride back to Santa's Village.

Christmas Train tickets may be purchased online beginning in early November.

Christmas Train tickets may be purchased to board the train during a specific time period. You may get in line and board the train at any time during the hour for which you purchase tickets.

While waiting for your boarding time, there are many activities for children to enjoy in Santa's Village located next to the train station.

On Saturday, December 15th and Sunday December 16th only, the Christmas Train will open at 2:00 pm. And, December 17th through December 23rd, the Christmas train will open at 4:00 pm.

Important Note: Regular train tickets, tokens, complimentary tickets, discount tickets, and/or coupons are not valid for the Christmas Train. All customers must ride the train to visit Santa Claus.

Tickets may be purchased online to ride the train on a specific day and during a specific time period. A one-time, online ticket fee will apply. Tickets may be purchased in person on the day that you will be riding the train, however, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to ride the train at a specific time. Refund Policy: Irvine Park Railroad does not offer refunds for Christmas Train tickets purchased online. If you are not able to ride the Christmas Train on the date for which you purchased tickets, or if the Christmas Train closes due to rain, please contact us on that day to exchange your tickets for a different day and time. Photos with Santa Claus
$10.00 per photo - $6.00 for each additional photo.

Irvine Park Railroad will take a picture of your children with Santa Claus. Each 5" x 7" photo is presented in an Irvine Park Railroad boarder and will be available for pickup shortly after it is taken. Or, you may take pictures with your personal camera at no cost.

Santa Bounce House Jumper
1 activity ticket per child for 10 minutes of jump time.

Time: 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Always a favorite with children, they’re sure to jump with joy in our Christmas bounce house. Children will jump and hop the night chill away.

Story Time with Mrs. Claus
Free for all visitors.

Time: 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Mrs. Claus will entertain children by reading from books including “The Night Before Christmas”, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” and other Christmas favorites. She will also lead both children and adults in singing Christmas carols. When not on stage, Mrs. Claus is available for pictures.

Christmas Cookie Decorating
1 activity ticket per person.

Time: 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Children of all ages can be imaginative and use frosting, candy and other goodies to decorate a giant sugar cookie… a big, sweet treat for Christmas.

Christmas Carnival Games
1 activity ticket per child.

Time: 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Children can try their luck at two Christmas carnival games located adjacent to the train station. Every child that plays wins a prize!

Great Food
Prices vary by item.

Enjoy all the favorites from hot dogs and hamburgers to cookies and freshly-popped popcorn. Hot chocolate, coffee and other snacks are available to purchase at both the train station and Santa’s Village.

Christmas Coloring Corner
Free for all visitors.

Time: 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Children can sit down at one of the coloring corner tables and color a Christmas coloring page that can be taken home and displayed for all to see.

Picture Stands
Free for all visitors.

Create lasting memories by taking photos in the festive holiday picture stands. Children and adults can pose together in a picture stand too!

Free Train Tickets

To receive 2 FREE regular train tickets, email us a copy of your favorite “Irvine Park Railroad Christmas Train” picture. The free train tickets are not valid for the Christmas Train and only 1 picture per family may be submitted. Pictures will become the property of Irvine Park Railroad and may be posted on www.irvineparkrailroad.com.

Email pictures to info@irvineparkrailroad.com and be sure to include your name and mailing address in the email. Please allow 2 weeks to receive your train tickets by US mail.

Come aboard our hay wagon pulled by a John Deere tractor for a 20-minute ride through Irvine Regional Park. As you sit on top of hay bales in the wagon, you'll be able to view some of the most beautiful park scenery in Orange County.

John Deere Tractor Racers
1 ticket per child ● Children ages 5 – 7.

This attraction is great for any child up for the challenge of driving a motorized John Deere Tractor racer for 5 minutes around a safe and fun obstacle course. Younger siblings or friends can ride along in the passenger seat for an additional ticket!

Halloween Bounce House Jumper

Children will have a blast as they jump for joy in the pumpkin bounce house. The pumpkin bounce house is one of the most popular Pumpkin Patch activities.

A skilled artist will turn visitor's faces into a creative work of art. Witches, pumpkins, ghosts and more... face painting is another favorite Halloween activity for the entire family.

With 1 ticket, children can try their luck at two carnival-style Halloween games. That's double the fun and every child wins a prize!

Both children and adults are sure to have fun navigating through the giant hay maze. Bales of hay are stacked at different heights... and, you must use your intuition to work your way through the winding paths to get to the end of the maze.

Create lasting memories by taking photos in the festive, fall picture stands. Children and adults can pose together in a picture stand too!

Guess The Weight of the Giant Pumpkin

Free for all individuals who have an email address.

Guess the weight of the giant pumpkin and the winner will take the pumpkin home! In order to enter the contest, a valid email address must be provided. The winner will be notified by email.

Pony Rides

$4.00 per child. Irvine Park Railroad does not own or operate the pony rides. Irvine Park Railroad tickets are not valid for the pony rides. Pony ride tickets must be purchased at the pony ride ticket booth.

A visit to the Pumpkin Patch will be complete when your child saddles up to ride the walking or trotting ponys. The ponys, located next to the train station, are a lot of fun for children to ride.

The Orange County Zoo

Visit the Orange County Zoo that over 100 animals native to Southern California call home. There is a petting zoo, too, an ideal activity for young children. The zoo is a 5-minute walk from the Pumpkin Patch.

Train Rides

1 Ticket per person — 12 months and younger FREE.

Both children and adults will enjoy this 12-minute ride through beautiful and historic
Irvine Regional Park. Visit with family and friends and ride the train that has been
delighting families all across southern California for 16 years. If you want to experience family fun in Orange County, plan to attend the Anniversary Celebration!

Panning for Gold

2 Tickets per person.

Visitors can pan for gold using a real, working water trough. A bag will be provided for
visitors to put their gold and precious gems.

Carnival Games

1 Ticket per child.

With 1 ticket, children can try their luck at two carnival games… that’s double the fun
and all children win a prize!

Bounce House

1 Ticket per child for 10 minutes of jump time.

This exciting Easter egg hunt will include eggs filled with candy, stickers, free train tickets, and more! Children will be separated by age group for each Easter egg hunt. Each Easter egg hunt will be limited to a certain number of children so that all children can find Easter eggs. Children may bring their own Easter basket or Irvine Park Railroad will offer Easter baskets available for purchase. Plan to arrive early for this popular event.

Important Note: Easter egg hunts may sell out… plan to arrive early and receive a wristband for a specific time.

Meet the Easter Bunny

For the cost of $10.00, children can meet and have their photo taken with the Easter Bunny. Each additional photo is $6.00. The pictures taken with the Easter Bunny can be purchased and picked up at the photo booth. Photos will be printed in a few, short minutes.

Both children and adults can enjoy a 12-minute ride through Irvine Regional Park. The engineer will narrate the train ride and point out areas of interest inside of the park… including the 300 year old historic oak grove, lakes, and historic landmarks. Children can enjoy 10 minutes of jump time in the bounce house. This is an activity children of all ages enjoy as they tumble, jump, and hippity hop with excitement.

The hay ride is a favorite activity for both children and adults. Take a 15-minute ride through Irvine Regional Park and enjoy the beautiful scenery… including beautiful Spring flowers, oak trees sprouting new growth, baby wild life, lush green meadows, and more.

A Bit of History

Growing up as childhood friends in South Orange County, John Ford and Steve Horn were inseparable. From the classroom, little league games and family vacations, John and Steve could always be found together.

At the beginning of the summer in 1977, John’s older brother asked Don Farmen if his little brother John and his friend Steve could work along side him at the snack bar in Doheny State Beach, California. And, the rest is history.

Both 13 years old at the time, John and Steve spent their summers and vacations working for Don Farmen. From renting bikes and beach gear, to selling sodas and burgers, John and Steve worked hard to learn the concession and catering business. As the years went by, they gained an increasing amount of knowledge, experience and responsibility.

In 1986, after being accepted to college, John and Steve learned of the opportunity to secure the food and bike rental concessions at Irvine Regional Park. They took a chance on their dream and signed a lease to operate their own concessions business. As things began to take off, they decided to expand their operations to include paddleboat rentals and eventually in 1988 they started their own catering business, Company Picnic Specialists. John and Steve’s families and friends often pitched in to help grow their newly-formed business.

As Irvine Park began to attract more visitors, their business continued to develop and grow. It was John and Steve’s desire to provide even more activities and attractions for park visitors. And, in 1996, John and Steve founded Irvine Park Railroad.

Over the years, John and Steve have continuously expanded the Irvine Park Railroad foundation. Special events, including the Easter Eggstravaganza, Anniversary Celebration, Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Train have been created to offer activities to visitors year round. And, the Irvine Park Railroad has also been expanded over the year to include Party Pavilions, moon bounce rentals, a full-service snack bar and a lot more.

Today, Irvine Park Railroad is known as a top destination in Southern California for family activities and fun!
